"Forty percent of people in the U.S. read one book or less last year," says Jobs. In that vein, this post is for non-readers. What follows is a list of the best books on the planet. That's it. Just the list. No commentary. No explanation. No proof whatsoever.

I can hear you non-readers groaning from here. What's the point of a list of books (no matter how great) if I don't intend to read any of them? Good point. Look, I'll bet you can name several countries in central Europe (Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, etc.), but 77 never been to any of them. I'll bet you know the tallest mountain in the world (Mt. Everest), but you haven't been within a rocket launch of the place. Hell, I'll bet you can name the capital of South Dakota (Pierre).

My point is that knowing these things makes you infuriatingly clever, ridiculously self-aware, and a real joy to be around-even if the information is savagely useless. Memorize the authors and book titles on my list, and you can add mighty damn literary to your list of virtues.

Great books, on the other hand, have many uses (other then reading them). Doorstops. Eye-catching knick-knacks. You get the picture. Okay, so here's my list of all-time best doorstops. And don't bother to read them. Really. It would take you months anyway. So forget it. Even if you did, no one would believe you.

Best Books on the Planet

Without further ado, here is my list of best books anywhere.

Best S Fiction: Choke 69 Chuck Palahniuk

Best New Fiction: The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Best Norwegian 90 Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson

Best Coming of Age Novel: Rule of the Bone by Russell Banks

Best Career Advice Book: The Dip by Seth Godin

Best First Person Novel: Independence Day by Richard Ford

Best Brazen Voice: Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem

Best Literary Thriller: The Havana Room by Colin Harrison

Best Idea Book: Blink by Malcolm Gladwell

Best Tokyo Fiction: Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami

Best Niger River Novel: Water Music by T.C. The Apple iPhone is going to be a very popular piece of hardware, and if you'd like to know how to get your favourite songs on it, you'd better read on.

The iPod took the world by storm, and now we have the possibility of a machine which downloadable audio book integrate your on the move entertainment with your cell phone, and even provide access to the internet.

If you are new to the world of hand held entertainment systems, you will probably want to know how to get music from two different sources. You will want to know how to take the music from your own collection and put that onto your new iPhone, and you will also want to know how to access the huge libraries of music available on the audio book club You will need a computer to do either of these, but it can be anything fairly recent. From the internet, you can get a software program which will make a copy of your CD music to your hard drive, and then you will need a connecting lead to effect the transfer to your iPhone.

The first step will be to get your existing music transferred. This will not take too long, as the software programs called "rippers" are capable of transferring music at much higher speeds than normal playback. If your hard drive is large enough, you can rip the music from all of your CDs in one go, before transferring it.

The biggest challenge of how to put music to iPhone is with finding reliable sources of music to download from the internet. Many new people get caught in a very dangerous trap, by using P2P sites. These are against the law, and the quality of the downloads is really poor. Often files are not what they are supposed to be, and they can easily contain malware which can be dangerous to your computer. Join a reputable site, where you can pay once for lifetime access, and you will have a completely different experience.

By joining a good site like this, and ripping the tracks from your existing CDs, you will soon find that you have plenty of music to transfer to your iPhone. Connect your iPhone to the 70 use iTunes to make the transfer, and you will learn the last part needed in how to put music to iPhone.

This article should have made it a little easier to get your music onto your Iphone. From the texture of the paper. the actual written word and most of all the visual imagery that the written words evoke. Why then, would I want to listen to a book when the actual reading of the book is one of downloadable audio book hidden pleasures?

First, let me start at the beginning. I first fell in love with books in 7th grade when Miss Hannum introduced me to Greek mythology. I found that not only did I read my assignments but, the entire books that contained the short stories. Since then, I have read one or two books every week of my life. That is literally a ton of books-I am nearly 63 years young. There is just a special pleasure in the written word. I have read everything from the classics to books on String Theory, spy novels, sci-fi and every thing in between.

Then came "books on tape" and at first I avoided them. They just did not have the sensual pleasure of the written word. However, about 15 years ago, I found myself commuting an hour and a half a day to work. It did not take long for me to realize that commercial radio is little more than mindless pablum filled with left and right-wing zealots and way too many sports talk shows. I then started listening to the books on tape and over a 10 year period listened to some great literature, listened and studied business management and learned two languages-one of them fluently.

I still preferred actual reading and when I was home always was working on reading as much as time permitted.

That brings me up to about five years ago. An impinged nerve in my spine finally got the best of me and even after an operation I was unable to hold a regular job. At first, I thought I would find solace in reading but, that had also been audio book bible from me. I am on constant pain killer therapy (obviously the surgery did not go as planned) and am unable to read more than a few lines before blurring and double-vision sets in.

That was when I went back to listening to audio books. Although I don't enjoy them as much as a real book, it is the only alternative that I had. These are my reasons for listening to books. I am sure that you can come up with many other reasons for listening rather than reading.

As far a where to get audio books, certainly check with your local library. Many libraries have extensive collections of audio books. After you run through that collection, you can always go to the big bookstores. However, they can be very pricey. I currently get most of my books from an internet audio bookstore and just download the books to my computer. I can then listen on the computer, burn it to a CD or load it onto my MP3 player. Not only do I not have to go to the bookstore (I am no longer permitted to drive) but, the cost of an audio book download is substantially cheaper than buying the physical product.

Stan Pontiere has been an avid reader since childhood until a medical condition took that pleasure from me. Audio books have now taken the place of reading.
